This exhilarating one day Polar trekking experience targets to the impressive 849 metre high Trollsteinen peak which stands in the centre of the Arctic island of Spitsbergen. The terrain is rugged and steep in places, which makes for a challenging yet enjoyable Arctic hiking adventure. The dramatic inland and coastal views you can enjoy on this trek make it a wonderful way to blow away the cobwebs of everyday life and give you perspective before joining one of our Summer Wildlife Voyages.
This combined trekking and glacier trip starts in Nybyen, which is located in the uppermost part of the Longyear Valley. The trek crosses the Lars glacier in nine stages, with all necessary equipment provided. The last stage of the ascent toward Trollsteinen's summit involves walking along a mountain ridge, formed and eroded into the shape of a horseshoe. The highest point of the ridge is dominated by Tollsteinen (means Troll Rock) from where you can enjoy panoramic views across fjords and mountains. Bring your camera! Lunch will be served at the summit overlooking Nordenskiöld Land National Park. This National Park boasts Svalbard's largest undisturbed areas of vegetation and extensive wetlands. This area is also home to large colonies of seabirds. After lunch you will return to Nybyen via the Longyearbreen glacier, from where you will be driven back to Longyearbyen. We recommend that only people in fit physical shape partake in the trip. A sturdy pair of walking boots is a must and gaiters are highly recommended.
