Introduction

Desroches is the largest and most accessible of the Amirantes (a cluster of 28 islands), situated 230 km to the southwest of Mahé and is the only island of the group to offer accommodation.  Accessible by a charter flight only, it is the quintessential paradise island, with a relaxed, peaceful atmosphere and long stretches of white sandy beaches. The island was originally named Wood Island by the British due to the sheer amount of dense tree vegetation, nearly all of which has been replaced by plantation and was later renamed after the former Governor of Mauritius, Chevalier des Roches.

Located just 4 degrees south of the equator, Desroches boasts one of the world's healthiest, malaria free, endless year-round summer climates.  The island was once an important producer of copra, a coconut product, however, now the coconut groves which still dominate the island make for a worthwhile walk or cycle ride.

The island is surrounded by 15 km of breathtakingly beautiful white sandy beaches, concealed beneath the shade of coconut palms.  Sheltered areas in the northern shores of the island provide excellent swimming opportunities, while the southern shore, guarded by coral reef is favoured for fly-fishing.

The exclusive and recently upgraded Desroches Island Resort is an all inclusive luxury resort and indeed the only resort situated in the entire atoll.  The new villas are quite simply stunning, with wonderfully appointed rooms and expansive lounge areas fitted with the latest multi media and music systems.  Personal infinity pools lead off to your very own section of shore, complete with a kayak, parked especially for your private use.  You will also have your own bicycle parked conveniently by the front door.

It comprises a dive centre, water sports and deep sea fishing facilities.  Such activities that visitors can partake in include sailing, canoeing, windsurfing, snorkelling, deep-sea fishing and diving.  It is possible to cycle or walk around a large extent of the island on the flat easy paths, with bicycles available to hire from various outlets. Aside from the water sports, cycling and walking trails that can be enjoyed on this island, your principal activity on Desroches will be to relax, unwind and enjoy fine dining in these beautiful surroundings.  You can sip champagne on your vast veranda looking out onto the Indian Ocean, safe in the knowledge that your ice machine will keep you stocked up with fresh ice cubes 24/7!
